How it works.

The eLAB system transforms your digital camera into an easy to use shade matching system, resulting not only in better clinical results but also in improved customer relations. With the eLAB system you can cover the entire natural tooth color spaces with only four dentin shades and three dedicated stains: red, yellow and grey.

The eLAB system is centred around a simple photographic protocol using suitable standard camera equipment like a DSLR camera (Nikon, Canon or Sony) a macro lens and a ring or lateral flash. In addition, a matching polar_eye filter is needed to eliminate surface reflections on the teeth and the white_balance grey reference card for measuring color.

Step 1: Capture

Using artificial intelligence and advanced image processing algorithms, eLAB_prime transforms a digital camera into easy to use shade matching system. Using the system takes less than one minute to auto-calibrate captured RAW images from different cameras with stunning accuracy. The software provides patient personal shade recipes for the most popular ceramic systems using only four standard dentin shades and three types of stains (red, yellow and grey).

Frequently Asked Questions

We all have experienced those embarrassing moments in our professional lives when our shade matching skills fall well short of expectations. Re-do’s are time consuming, expensive and a frequent source of friction between the dental lab and the dental office. We have all been there.

There are three distinct disadvantages with the use of shade guides for colour assessment:

Firstly, the range of available colours in the shade guides is inadequate and the colour samples are not logically distributed.
Secondly, there is a lack of consistency among and between dentists in using the shade guides to match colours.
Thirdly, there is no industry standard for tooth colours.

Bellow is a comparison between a standard Vita Classical A3 shade tab and the various interpretations from different ceramic manufacturers of the same shade photographed in 45º/0º in a soft viewing booth under D50. Samples were made in accordance with ISO/WD 13078-2.

The CIELAB graph bellow shows the comparison between a large population of natural tooth colors (n=3787) with standard shading system showing that the range of available colours in the shade guides is inadequate and the colour samples are not logically distributed. This results in a considerable coverage error making it virtually impossible to pick the right shade most of the times because it simply isn't there.

The eLAB system transforms your digital camera into an easy to use shade matching system. Chances are, you already have what you need; typically a digital camera body (Nikon or Canon) equipped with a suitable macro lens (60 mm - 105 mm) together with a macro flash (ring flash or lateral flash). What you and your lab will need in addition to that is matching polar_eyes filter for your flash assembly as well as white_balance grey reference card, both of which are available in our web shop: https://emulation.me/products

If you are a dental laboratory:

In addition to the equipment mentioned above you will need an annual eLAB_prime licence to import RAW images from your partner-clinic to create patient files, process images and to generate patient personal mixing recipes.
